Leatherette, leather effect, bonded, faced, aniline, semi-aniline, full grain, top grain, grade A – D, sometimes what should be a simple straight forward choice turns out to be so complicated it seems you’ve opened up a can of worms!

First of all let’s find out more about it . . .

What is it?

A material made from the skin of an animal by tanning or a similar process. A universal favourite for upholstering furniture and a versatile material available in many different forms.

Let’s explore the different types of leather brought to you by Recliners Direct who strive to offer diverse products and extensive choice.

What is Leatherette?

Leatherette is an artificial material. It is cheaper to source and most commonly used to simulate real leather. It is very durable and tends not to crack or fade. The technology in Leatherette (Sometimes know as PU leather) has come on in leaps and bounds over the last few years with new and improved manufacturer and processes being used.

What is Bonded Leather?

Bonded leather is a material which is made from genuine leather and a compound with special chemical components. It has the same look, feel and smell of genuine leather because it is tannery made; produced on the same equipment using the same methods as genuine leather.

What is Leather Faced?

Leather Faced upholstery means that the main body or parts of the chair that take the wear and tear over the years are genuine leather. The outsides or non-wear parts are a perfect colour match vinyl upholstery.

What is Semi-Aniline Leather?

Semi-Aniline leather is pure aniline leather that has a small amount of pigment or clear finish thus allowing the natural characteristics of the hide to still show through while offering some of the benefits of colour consistency and increased wear-ability.

What are the differences between the grades of leather?

Our full leather recliners cannot be beaten for quality and colour. They are made from genuine cow hide and are compiled at some of the best tanneries in the world. We offer different grades of leather raging from A to D which reflect the thickness and finish of the upholstery. Grade A being a thicker more grainier finish, Grade B and C tend to be Semi-Analine leathers with a softer more supple feel, and Grade D being a thicker smoother finish.

Genuine leather is 50% stronger than other upholstery and has an average life of 10 – 20 years!

2. Leather offers year round comfort

Leather ‘breathes’ so it stays cool in the summer and warm in the winter

3. Leather is extremely durable

It is strong enough to resist tearing, even along the seam lines, its natural oils prevent cracking, flaking, tearing or peeling.

4. Leather ages well

Ii is very flexible, retaining its shape and look new for years.

5. Leather colour stays looking fresh and vibrant

Every leather hide is finished with special dyes to create a deep, rich colour that stands the test of time.

6. Leather is easy to care for

Very low maintenance it only requires a dust or wipe to keep it looking fantastic

Care & Cleaning of Leather

Leather is a natural material and, when properly cared for, it will maintain its beauty and appearance for many years. It is also the easiest to care for of all upholstery materials. Each leather type has its own care and cleaning specifications, but there are also some generalizations.

General Care Tips:

Keep it clean. Vacuum and dust often using a crevice tool in seams.
Though leather is resistant to fading, direct, prolonged exposure to the sun will cause any material to fade. Therefore, it is important to position your leather furniture away from windows, skylights or other intense light sources when possible.
Keep your leather furniture at least 12” away from radiators and other intense heat generators to prevent drying and possible cracking.
If spills do occur, attend to them quickly, blotting the stain rather than rubbing.
Do not leave newspapers on leather furniture. The ink in the newsprint will rub onto the leather. This is true for all upholstery.
Take extra care with sharp instruments and animal claws. Leather is much stronger than upholstery but will puncture with force, causing need for a difficult repair.
Never use harsh cleaners, chemicals or saddle soaps as they may damage the finish. Before using any cleaner, test-clean on a hidden area.

At Recliners Direct we feel passionately about the comfort and happiness of the infirm and the elderly having easy access to the things that improve the standard of their life. it may sound obvious, but a comfy chair is one of those things. Here at Recliners Direct we are more than aware of the myriad of benefits a good recliner can offer, but do we do genuinely get asked from time to time why we think recliners are better than normal seats, so here are a few reasons why a good recliner can be so beneficial to you.
